Sedation dentistry refers to the use of anesthetics and sedative drugs in dental procedures. There are a range of sedation options, depending on the patient’s treatment needs, which can be used in combination with local anesthetic (a numbing agent). Dental sedation can be used to:

• Reduce discomfort in patients who experience sensitivity in their teeth or gums
• Help young children relax in the dentist’s chair
• Make dentistry services more accessible to patients who have physical or cognitive conditions that make it difficult to receive dental care

Also known as oral conscious sedation, this sedative drug comes in the form of a liquid or pill that is taken orally. It puts the patient in a deep state of calm and relaxation without putting them to sleep. You will be awake, but you will feel no stress or discomfort. The drug is taken around an hour before your procedure and can take 1-2 hours to take full effect. Following your procedure, it may take several hours for the effects to fully wear off.
