Were you aware that gum disease has stages? We will describe two major stages, namely gingivitis and periodontitis. Our goal is to help you understand some of the symptoms and what we can do to help you treat them.

Gingivitis is the first stage. If you have this condition, you may notice your gums are red and swelling. Furthermore, the gums may slightly recede from your teeth, which gives the illusion that the teeth are getting longer. Bad breath that will not go away could also hint at gingivitis, though it is not an absolute indicator.

Thankfully, gingivitis is considerably easy to reverse. If you suspect you have it, please do not hesitate to visit our dentists, Dr. Peter Roukema. You can get an examination, learn how to beat back the condition and get started off with a dental cleaning.

Periodontitis comes after gingivitis if it is not treated. The gums may really recede from the teeth, creating what are called periodontal pockets, which plaque can gather in. Your teeth may also feel and become loose, as the support from the gums fades.

While not desirable, periodontitis can be treated. We offer some treatments that can deal with this stage.
